who are we?
Although we are not the main provider of services to young people, Salisbury District Council is committed to working with its partners, like Wiltshire County Council which looks after schools and youth services, to provide the services you want.
Our commitment to achieving this is set out in our Children and Young People's Strategy.
A strategy for you
We spoke to a cross section of young people across south Wiltshire to help us put together our Children and Young People's Strategy. This is what you told us you wanted:
- More places to go to at evenings and weekends
- Reduced bus fares for their age group
- More police dealing with anti social behaviour
- Courses outside of school
- More cycle routes
- More recycling
- Youth café open until late
Our commitment to you
The Strategy sets out six main promises to young people:
- Create more positive images of young people through our own marketing and through the media.
- Promote activities for young people.
- Support your education and future careers
- Give you a say in the issues that affect your lives
- Help you to feel safe and stay healthy
- Help to provide a place you can call home, when you leave home
Putting words into action
The council has given itself an action plan of things it will do for you, over the next three years. That action plan is set out in full in the Youth Strategy but here's just a taster...
We do care, and we will:
- Create more positive images of young people
- Give you your own section in the council's magazine, the Citizen. (link or email address citizen@salisbury.gov.uk)
- We will work with Wiltshire County Council to set up more leisure credit schemes where young people are given vouchers or prizes to attractions for doing work in the community.
We also want to:
- Look into providing public transport discounts for young people to make it easier for you to get out and about
- Produce a brochure highlighting all activities available to young people (we've done this already – see our Gr8 stuff brochure)
- Develop more holiday-time activities
- Seek funding for a youth café
- Provide more sports and arts activities
- Provide more after school homework clubs
And we want to help you get your voice heard, and we will:
- Include young people at public meetings when discussing issues that affect them.
- Develop training for young people so they understand politics and local democracy and are given all the tips they need to make sure they can have their say.
- Set up a young people's consultation forum to make sure young people's voices are heard on all the big issues.
You have told us you want more places to visit and things to do, and that's why we want to:
- Enable young people to take part in alternative sports
- Provide more sports activities and projects
- Provide more community safety projects
Looking after your interests doesn't end when you leave school or college, we want to help prepare you for later life by:
- Looking to create more training, work experience and apprenticeship opportunities.
- Provide more sports and leadership courses
- Provide work experience opportunities in the arts.
- Target a percentage of new homes to ensure there are affordable places young people can call home
